Dinesh Katre, PhD

Dinesh Katre is a renowned Design Researcher and Innovator with over 33 years of professional experience. His fascination for human psychology has driven him to explore the synthesis of design and psychology within the realm of human-computer interaction. He has special interest in Cognitive Systems Design and Cognitive Work Analysis. Over many years, he has meticulously developed a comprehensive curriculum titled "Design Psychology." This curriculum aims to foster a deeper understanding of users and inspire innovative interaction ideas based on predictive behavioral patterns. The online Design Psychology Courses conducted by him are intended for Product Designers, UX Designers, HCI Practitioners, Product managers and Design Students. In order to further expand the research, development and propagation of the field of Design Psychology, he founded EngramLogic, a company and mission dedicated to evolving and advancing the new frontier of psychonomic interaction design.   

Dinesh is well recognized for his expertise in Human-Computer Interaction, Digital Preservation, and Computing for Cultural Heritage. He is the founder of the Human-Centred Design & Computing Group at C-DAC, Pune, where he was Senior Director and Head of Department. In this capacity, for over 32 years, he dedicated himself to the mission of 'Computing for Cultural Heritage', creating software solutions, information systems, mobile apps, multimedia, and immersive reality experiences that promote this cause. Dinesh has served as the Vice Chair of IFIP Working Group on Human Work Interaction Design. He organized a number of HCI conferences and workshops in India, Sweden, Denmark and Portugal.

Dinesh is a recipient of the most prestigious Emmett Leahy Award 2020, which was established in the United States in 1967 as a tribute to Emmett Joseph Leahy, the pioneer of information management discipline. Dinesh was honoured by the National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) with the NDSA Individual Innovation Award during DLF Forum/DigiPres 2019, Tampa, FL, USA. The interactive museum and virtual heritage projects implemented in his leadership have also won the Mathan Digital Inclusion Awards (South Asia & Asia Pacific) in 2015 and 2012. In 2014, Dinesh had the honour to represent India in the UNESCO’s International Experts Consultative Meet at Warsaw, Poland for drafting the Standard Setting Instrument on Safeguarding the Memory of the World in the Digital Era, which is unanimously passed by the General Conference of the UNESCO.

Dinesh holds a Ph.D. (2005) in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) from Birla Institute of Science & Technology (BITS), Pilani (sponsored and hosted by C-DAC); a Master of Design (1992) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai; and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1990) from Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Arts, University of Mumbai.
